PUPPY KINDERGARTEN

Welcome!
Instructor: Heather Crane, RVT
- The goals of this class are to give you an opportunity to socialize your puppy, introduce you to training and some basic commands and finally to discuss some common “puppy issues”.

Introductions…

- Introduce yourself and your puppy.
- What breed is your puppy?
- How/why did you select this breed of dog?

What is socialization and why is it so important for your new puppy?

- Socialization Table
- Improved social flexibility, emotional stability and trainability. A dog that you can take more places and do more things with.
- Lack of socialization may lead to fear, which is too often related to biting.

Why is it important to teach your puppy basic commands?

- Leadership
- Teach a common language – ESL.
- Show them how to please you.
- Give them a job to do. Make them think!

What are some guidelines or rules for effective training using commands?

1). Say the command and then make the behaviour happen.
2). Reward every time when learning something new.
3). Use their name only to get your pup’s attention. Don’t combine it with every command.
4). DON’T REPEAT THE COMMAND! They heard you the first time.

What are the basic commands my pup should learn?

- Recall/Come, Sit, Down, Stand, Stay, Off/Leave it.
- Instruction Sheet
- Some practice time!

How do I begin training my dog?

- Make training fun for both yourself and your new friend.
- Train 2-3 times daily for short sessions i.e. 10 minutes.
- Reward correct responses within ½ a second.
- Use rewards that your pup enjoys.
- Begin learning new things in a quiet environment. Gradually increase the distraction level.
- Use positive reinforcement. The opposite of a reward is no reward. If your puppy is acting inappropriately, you may withdraw your attention.
- Follow the rules for effective training listed above.

What are some common puppy issues, and how can I deal with them?

- Housetraining – Consistency and timing are the keys.
- Biting/Nipping – Teach bite inhibition – “OUTCH”!
- Jumping up – Reward proper greetings.
- Handling – Practice handling mouth, teeth brushing, grooming, feet, nail trimming and the tail.
- Barking – Train bark/speak and quiet.
- Pulling on the leash – Who is walking who?
- Crate Training – How and why?

What are some tips for finding a good dog trainer or puppy school?

- Reputation. Ask around.
- What are their qualifications and background?
- Which training methods do they use? Positive reinforcement?
- Watch a class before you sign up.
