POOL PROOF YOUR PET
It's important to know......
All dogs can’t swim. If your pet loves the water but isn’t the best swimmer there are doggy-lifejackets on the market. Remember, a life jacket is not a substitute for human vigilance.
Exit strategy
Pools are deadly traps for your pet as the water level is lower than the surrounding deck making it difficult to escape even for the best swimmers. Your dog must have a way to safely get out of the pool without help. Stairs or dog ramps are the easiest for your dog to use. There are a number of commercial brands available. With a little effort, you may even be able to train your dog to use the ladder. In all cases you should take the time to teach your dog where and how to exit the pool. Remember fatigue may hamper your dog’s ability to escape.
Prevention
Supervision is of course the best means to preventing pool accidents. For those times your pet is alone by the pool be sure to place barriers (gates/fences) to prevent access and minimize their risk.
Solar blankets are a common problem as the dog may try to walk out onto the surface and then become entangled and immobilized by the blanket.
Make sure your pet has fresh water and a shaded area. This will help minimize the risk of your pet trying to drink from the pool or jumping in to cool off.
Never throw your dog into the water. They will most likely paddle to safety but could very well become fearful of another pool encounter.
It is recommended that you bathe your pet before and quickly rinse them after swimming in your pool. The former to protect you from bacteria and the latter to protect your pet’s skin from the chlorine.
