Costumes
Touch senstive dogs - pets that fuss if a leaf gets caught in their tail, are better off with just a fancy collar or bandana
Take your dog out in costume for a test run before halloween
Your dog should be able to breathe, see, hear and move freely. Avoid masks, they interfere with a dog's natural wide-angle vision.
Be sure the costume isn't too tight. Watch for signs of discomfort, like chewing or pawing.
Remove small or dangling pieces. Floppy stuff is a chew toy waiting to happen
Make sure the costume doesn't drag on the ground so your dog won't step on it. Also watch out for parts of the costume that might catch on trees, bushes, or decorations.
Costume fabric should be flame-retardant
Be sure the costume is appropriate for the weather conditions, so your pet doesn't get overheated.
Never leave your dog unsupervised in costume
Taking your pet with you trick or treating
Keep a good grip on the leash and expect the unexpected
Be sure your pet wears their regular collar, tags and identifying information
Designate one person in the group to be responsible for the dog (they can become overlooked in the excitement)
Reflective tape on their costume or a light or strobe on their collar will keep them visible
Watch the ground for stray bits of candy or wrappers that dogs can grab
Don't forget the poop bag
Don't leave your dog alone in a car. Those passing in costumes could send your pet into a barking fit. Halloween in a wild night and kids sometimes do things they usually wouldn't.
Treats
Offer your pet "doggie-safe" treats, but don't let them overdue it. Here are a few points to remember:
Chocolate can be deadly for dogs.
The danger of poisoning depends on the type and amount eaten and the size of the dog.
Call your vet or take your dog to a clinic if you discover they have gotten into chocolate.
